The one thing I actually have had time to do for myself lately is read. I stick a book in the side of the rocker in OBaby’s nursery and I feed my brain while I feed OBaby.
I’m on my third book so far, this one is titled “Einstein Never Used Flashcards”. The subtitle is “How Our Children Really Learn and Why They Need to Play More and Memorize Less”.
It’s a very insightful perspective into the industry of “accelerated learning” toys and what the push to make your infant a bilingual, musically talented, baby-signing, early potty trained ‘Baby Einstein’ actually does (or doesn’t do) for children’s brains.
So I ran down to the local library, got myself a card (1 year after moving here. Shameful, I know.) and rounded up an arsenal of weapons to help make my baby an Einstein the old fashioned way.
Don’t be fooled by his focused reading face. He’s really just analyzing the inaccurate 2D portrayal of 3 dimensional mice.

What a fun Mommy you are : ). You know, not that you are asking, but the best, best, best thing I think you can do for your baby to make sure he is a good learner, is to make learning fun : ). Every time you have the opportunity! And I know that a mom like you will certainly do that!
I always put books by Seth during floor time too. Read a ton, doesn’t matter what – just the sound of your voice. It is still Seth’s favorite to look at picture book and be read to. You wounld not believe the vocabulary our three year old has because of it!
