Of all the things that intimidate me about parenting, I think flying with a baby takes the proverbial cake. But here goes nothing!
We are taking off tomorrow morning (ON Thanksgiving, I know, but thanks to the time difference we’ll still get there before noon and O My Budget-Breakers, you should have seen how much cheaper it was to fly on the holiday!) for my homeland with my little Minnesotan baby and my big Minnesotan husband.
I’ve been making lists, letting things simmer for a while as I picture the things we will want and need over the week that we are there and as we travel. From time to time something will hit me like ‘O! EXTRA BURP RAGS!’ and I will run over and add it to the list. A sleep deprived mommy’s brain is not iron clad. The list is my life saver.
And no, Micah (aka OBaby) is not actually going in the small luggage. His stuff is.
In all the craziness that is O My Family traveling for the first time, I can’t help but think about how awesome this all is.
I am flying to Oregon with my son and my husband for a holiday.
That means: a) We were able to afford the tickets. b) DanO was able to get the time off. c) OBaby is healthy and happy (during the day) and remarkably easy on-the-go.
It also means huge wonderful heart-filling things for me: a) I get to see my dad (and hopefully get a Daddy Back Rub. I don’t care that I’m a mom, I still totally need Daddy Back Rubs sometimes and now is one of those times). b) I get to eat Thanksgiving Dinner around a table with my family. WITH MY FAMILY! I haven’t seen most of them (my brother included) since my Grandma’s memorial last January. c) OBaby will get to see the Pacific Ocean. This makes my little West Coast heart so, so glad. I cannot wait to look at the ocean with him and tell him about how big God is.
If I don’t die from joy and excitement (what sleep exhaustion? I have no idea what you’re talking about.) between now and tomorrow morning, I will have much for which to be thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy every minute with your family!!!
Sounds like fun, I know you will have a great time. Have a Hapy Thanksgiving. By the way I LOVE OBaby’s “real” name.
I’m here from SortaCrunchy, and I have had the most fun reading your last few posts! Even with the hard parts, it makes me miss the newborn days. I hope your Thanksgiving travels go well! My plan was to keep my babies ‘”hooked up to me as long as possile, then the flying part wasn’t so bad.
Have a wonderful trip! I’ve flown only twice w/ the kids, once w/ just Fynn, and then recently with both. The anticipation is worse than the actual flight, honestly! Just breathe, and if things get difficult on the flights, I’ve always found that people respond so well if you just say “I’m sorry, this is our first time, please forgive the noise” just acknowledging others helped us through, and in turn they often helped us :)
Happy Thanksgiving, have a wonderful time! (and really, there is nothing better than sharing the ocean with your children…)
Have a perfect Thanksgiving weekend. Say hi to the Pacific for me. And report back on OBaby’s first flight. I bet it goes so well, you’ll be bored.
Have fun in Oregon!!! (I live in Roseburg) I hope that the flying went well, I can’t wait to hear all about it. Happy Thanksgiving!
We have a 14 month old named Micah!!! We are in love with the name, in love with our baby, and I also hail from the West Coast and understand the peace that comes to one’s heart upon spending time at the Pacific Ocean. So happy to have met another Micah! New to the website – am enjoying reading it. :)
Oh yeah and if that’s not enough coincidence, I am married to a Dan also!
