You guys.
The eighth coolest thing I’ve ever been told was sent to me in an email last week.
1 through 7 being (in no particular order) ‘I love you’, ‘You passed New Testament class (aka you can graduate from college)’, ‘Hi, my name is Dan Olfelt’, ‘you’re pregnant’ (said the little plastic stick), ‘It’s time to walk down the aisle’, ‘It’s a boy’, and ‘[private]‘.
It went something like this: ‘Hi, my name is Casey and I used you and OBaby as a case study in my graduate school child development class,’ she said. Don’t worry, the first three paragraphs of the email were a preamble convincing me that she was not, in fact, a weirdo (I think her exact words were ‘ultimate cyber-stalking’?). It was part of an assignment to follow three parenting blogs and note their alignment with child developmental theorists.
[Casey would like you to know that she does not actually function under the assumption that developmental theories are relevant to everything we do as parents. In other words, if you walked up to her on the street, she would be able to hold a normal conversation, likely even a pleasant one.]
So, you’re saying that somewhere in the country, a graduate level assignment containing snippets of my ramblings and pictures of OBaby got handed to someone with their doctorate?
You’ll have to excuse me for a moment while I go collect the pieces of my mind because it just got blown.
Ok, first of all, the fact that there are like, tens of people who even care to read the things that rattle around in my head still rocks my world on a regular basis. Then there’s the occasional comment I get telling me that one of those same people actually likes reading this stuff, which is like, holy moly there are no words.
But this? Someone analyzing the snapshots that I share here of OBaby’s life and assessing that I am successfully helping him reach “Piaget’s second substage of sensorimotor development, [called] “First Habits and Primary Circular Reactions”, by allowing him to “explore [his] environment in order to adequately develop and progress through the stages of development (Santrock, 2008)”?
Mind. Blown.
[A fist pump at his developmental awesomeness.]

oh meee oh me.. I am all too familiar with Piaget. I would TOTALLY love this assignment!! And I would have totally chosen you for it too ;] Ok, and I am totally not exaggerating or faking this at all.. but OBaby is totally one of the cutest little boys I’ve ever seen. He has the CUTEST eyes, and his eyebrows are totally to die for.
And I’m totally aware of how many times I said “totally” in this comment. At first, it was accidental.. then I noticed a trend and went with it ;]
Here’s to OBaby being one of the most famous (and cutest) babes on the internet in 2010!!
I KNOW! It was insta-flash-back when she started name dropping the likes of Erickson (only minus the grad school part). If only all teachers were as good at incorporating the outside world (the blogosphere) in their classroom!
I love it! That’s awesome! Pretty cool of an assignment from a professor to follow blogs!
And for the record, when my girlfriends and I talk, we’re always like… “did you read o my family today? So cute.” or something like that. Actually we were just talking about you over lunch today:) All good of course! Our husbands roll their eyes because they all think that they have lost it since they don’t understand blog-friendships:) So you have multiple readers just here in Lex:)
BTW, how did you change your http with keeping the old feed? Just something that I’ve been wondering and it came up at lunch so I thought I’d ask:)
Hi Abby! How’s koda? I had to ask DanO (AKA my IT dept) about the whole feed/http thing… he says he used a wordpress plugin to re-direct the traffic automatically. So maybe there’s a blogspot one you could use?
Look at me, I typed that out like I had a clue what I was saying! (she says as she asks her husband if plugin is one word or two.)
I think our bloggy friendship is fun, too! And blog husbands should probably start conferences too so they can commiserate about all the “Hey hunny! Can I read this to you?” and the “Remember that one blog I was telling you about?” that they endure. I have a feeling DanO is not the only one who hears that 10x a week.
Koda’s as spoiled as ever:) He’s having fun with his new Christmas toys from his stocking:) Do you do a stocking for Pearl? So cute!
I will have to ask my hubby about that whole plugin thing. I’m not all that great with all the tech-y stuff. I’d really like to change my http though. I also would love to change my header and stuff but we don’t have photoshop and again, I really have no clue where to start! :) Your new header is great!! Tell DanO good job!!
That is totally incredibly cool! I’m super impressed that colleges are using blogs in curriculum too. Although I feel like I need to use grammar check along with spell check much more frequently now.
Oh great, I am suddenly aware of my not-higher-education-approved grammar usage around here! ;)
I always tell myself I’m breaking the rules to communicate my message better with my audience. That makes it ok to start sentences with conjunctions and end with with prepositions, right? K, good.
Totally makes sense. Especially if I could remember what a preposition was! HAHA! I was horrible at grammar!
LOVE IT! :) And that picture of O Baby is adorable. Who doesn’t love I just woke up face? ;)
That is totally his just woke up face and I DO love it! O man, I don’t know if I could love it more. It’s probably on of the top 10 parts of being his mommy. Look at those eyes!
Ok, I’m done gushing.
How exciting, and very cool! My mind would be blown as well. Go you!
It was exciting! One of those moments where I felt like I should call my dad, you know? Maybe print it and frame it?
Definitely call and frame worthy :)
Oh my gosh! That is way cool. Even if most of the words in her statements about you flew way over my head :) Congratulations!
Mine too! But hey, if she claims they apply to OBaby’s atmosphere, I’ll take it.
I’ve been(not always happily)dealing with Piaget,Erikson, etc. alot recently and find it completely unfair that I was not given the chance to study your blog(well,I do almost study your blog but I never get any kind of grade for it). I think maybe I should sue someone for such injustice.Given the fact that Dunkin Donuts lost to some person who didn’t know what “caution-contains hot liquid” means, I’d probably win too! ;)
Go OBaby and your developmental awesomeness! And go OBaby’s mama for doing so well with her New Years resolution! : )
♥
I know, wouldn’t blogging for college credit be awesome? I’ve only been out for 2 years and things sure have changed already ;). I’m kidding, I think there was a little more to it than surfing the blogosphere all day. But still! I can dream, right?
That made me laugh. And it reminded me that I prefer honest and clear blog talk (like yours) to edubabble. Hope she did well on the assignment. Thanks for sharing.
Edubabble. That is totally the word for it. I felt instantly out of my league reading the paper. Well, at least my current league. You know, the one consisting of the 5 month old.
I’m majoring in child development, and I talk about Piaget and the other big theorists ALL of the time. I laughed when I saw “Santrock” because I can’t even count how many times I’ve cited those textbooks. I wish I had an assignment that involved following blogs! I just do it for the fun of it and to see your adorable little boy!
I laughed when I saw that the Santrock quote came from 2008. They WOULD make a new edition of the textbook every year. Jerks.
Heck yeah, developmental awesomeness! Nicely done, mama. Nicely done.
Awe, thanks friend. (Although I think it was mostly OBaby’s doing, to be honest.)
lol! That is awesome. You’ll need to save that e-mail for Obaby’s baby book. :)
Hehe! “Hey guess what, Micah, once upon a time when you were a baby I recorded your every babble and published it online, then someone I’d never met read it and determined that you were developmentally adequate.”
Maybe I should word it a little differently when I put it in the book?
That’s amazing… very cool. Cute picture, btw :)
Awe, thanks! That’s his just woke up face. My very favorite.
How cool! Isn’t that great to hear as a mom! By the way I love your blog design; so creative!
