O My Book Week: Skippyjon Jones

OBaby got a friend in the mail yesterday. The friend came in an envelope and was sent to him by my college roommate. At first glance at the package, I was confused what would be so urgent that it was sent “OVER NIGHT PRIORITY” from southern California, but when I opened it, I instantly understood.

Skippyjon Jones wanted to be part of O My Book Week! I expect nothing less from this crazy loco adventurous cat than for him to fly 2/3rds of the way across the country just to be a part of this here blog. You see, Skippyjon Jones is a thrill seeker going through quite the identity crisis.

Is he a cat? A bird? A mouse? A moose? A Mexican sword fighting chihuahua?

You’ll just have to step into his closet to find out.

There is something so whimsical and fantastic (which I do mean in the fantasy kind of way) about this adventure story*. It’s like you’ve tripped and fallen into the incredibly detailed imagination of a small child. Really, on multiple occasions it had me wondering just how the author, Judy Schachner, could be so dern creative. And witty! O, did I mention the witty?! I literally laughed out loud while reading this to OBaby (who was mostly occupied by sucking on Skippyjon’s ample ears).

My very favorite part of the whole book, though, might be Skippyjon’s mom.  She calls him by a different nick-name every single time she refers to him in the book. “Mr. Kitten Britches… Mr. Fuzzy Pants… Mr. Fluffernutter… Mr. Cocopugs…” and it was so reassuring to know that I’m not the only one who does that.

Right, my little Zoom Zoom Bear?

{Whatever, Mom.}

*This just in: This is only the first in a series of Skippyjon Jones books. The adventures continue!

    I love Skippyjon Jones! And, of course, Mama Junebug Jones. One of the kindergarten teachers I worked with had Skippyjon Jones books in her classroom and they are such a treat to read aloud.

    I LOVE these books. They’re tied for absolute favorite children’s books. It’s so easy as an adult to get really into them and do different voices that kids just love.

    Skippyjon is GREAT! Muy, muy, great! :) I bought the first one when I was pregnant, knowing my husband would love to do the Spanish accent. We’ve gotten the mummy one on the doghouse one since – all fabulous!

  8. Wow, we’ve never read these books. I’ve heard of them but never really knew what they were about. I’ll have to look for them next trip to the library.

    I just did my linky-ed post today on Skippyjon. Then I just noticed you posted this yesterday. I somehow missed your post last night! Oh well. We, apparently, love all the same books. =) When you first mentioned a MckLinky for Friday, I immediately thought, Bear Snores On. But then you did that one. O my repeatedly-beat-me-to-punch! Geez. =)
