O My Book Week: You Are Special and 8 months old

Dear OBaby,

You are 8 months old today and you are so special to me.

I love reading this board book to you when we are snuggling in the rocker in your room. I hope that somehow you are able to absorb its message.

It’s a story of a town where all of the citizens are wooden and spend their time ranking and judging each other. Some people have good rankings and wear them proudly like jewels. Others have been given bad rankings and walk around like they are wearing stains.

One person, though, doesn’t seem to have any rankings at all. She says it’s because she spends time with Eli the woodcarver.

Eli the woodcarver is the one who created each of the citizens of this town and he knows just how special he made them. Funny things happen to those rankings when the citizens spend time with Eli and learn just how special they are to him.

OBaby, I of all people believe you are special just the way you are. You are so joyful, inquisitive and precious. I cannot wait to see what other characteristics emerge in you. But on those days when what your mother thinks of you just doesn’t cut it, I want you to know this in your heart of hearts:

The creator of heaven and Earth made you, the One who carved out the oceans with his hands also knit you together in my womb.

He knows the number of freckles you will have and the number of times you’ll skin your left knee.

The God who knows and has all things wants you to spend time with Him.

He wants you to listen to Him.

He wants you to be like Him.

If that’s not special, I don’t know what is.

I love you to the moon and back (but not nearly as much as the One who created the moon does).

-Mommy

I got this as a baby shower gift and we LOVE it. It seriously makes me tear up every time I read it, esp. the line at the end where Eli says to Puncinello, “and I don’t make mistakes.”

    Love it.

Oh, I love this book! I first heard this book read in Wed night bible study when I was helping out with the kids. I bought the book soon after! The book is just long enough to read all the way through a breathing treatment when John’s asthma is acting up. Thanks for featuring this book. I hope many people read it because of your blog!
