Last week DanO gave his boss his letter of resignation.
Without getting into details, I will just say that you cannot insult your employee’s wife’s ability to be a good mother and expect there to be no consequences. Yes, you read that correctly.
(::waves hi to DanO’s former employer who reads this blog::)
But you know what that really means? It means we’ve spent the last few days around here enjoying (f)unemployment. O gosh, it has been awesome. We’ve hit up the Minnesota Zoo, the Children’s Museum, the library (twice!) and multiple local lakes. We’ve fired up the grill three, count them, three times, and DanO and OBaby are getting more than their fair share of quality Daddy-son time.

There are always blessings amongst the trials, aren’t there?
In fact, there’s a general air of celebration in our house (perhaps we are over compensating for the air of uncertainty?) and it is in that celebratory tone that I would like to make an announcement:
O My Family is hightailing it to Oregon for the next week!
We are very excited to take a vacation right now. Nothing sounds more freeing than to up and fly across the country to focus on nothing but family.
Much like last time, we will be spending time on the coast, but unlike last time, we will be bringing along a baby who can do this:
Wouldn’t you know, after 8:00 solid minutes of recording him thinking about it, I turned the camera off and WOOSH! He pulled himself up. And please forgive the shoes, socks and no pants look. The laundry wardrobe department is struggling to keep up with his solid food eating practices and we were fresh out of pants.
OBaby is getting O so strong and daring, exploring his abilities and constantly trying new things. His days now contain at least one series of ::thud:: ::pause:: ::waaaaaaaaaaaaaah:: as we learn how to get up and down from standing. It’s been hard, but growth and difficulty always come hand-in-hand, don’t they?
Growth and difficulty.
Trials and blessings.
Standing and falling.
Through these we are learning.
~~~~~~
See you on the other side of the Rockies tomorrow!
Did I read that first part right???
OH MY GOODNESS.
Good for you guys. I’m so proud of your husband for standing up for his wife.
Wow, just wow.
Good luck guys! :) Enjoy your trip, enjoy the time, enjoy the uncertainty. Sometimes it’s the best way to go!
That baby is TOO CUTE TO STAND! Although he is standing so um, well you know.
I love your “Um please don’t do that!”
and here’s hoping DanO gets another job ASAP with a more considerate boss. Have a great vacation!
Wow. I hope DanO’s employer reads this and realizes what a(n) (insert curse word) donkey move that was. Wow.
Oh man. The first month of our marriage, Paul hadn’t started his job yet and I hadn’t found one. It was THE. BEST. I can only imagine how much more fun it would be with a baby and some money (read: we spent everything on a wedding and a honeymoon). Enjoy!
I just know God has a better job for DanO that will come along at just the right time. Until then, HAVE FUN and enjoy the break. Corey once resigned from a job and took the next month OFF (which was possible due to severance), which he’s never done before. Natalie was about one, and we lived in San Diego, and he landscaped our entire yard (which burned to the ground in less than 12 months thanks to a wildfire, but he enjoyed the labor while it lasted). It was an uncertain time, but it was also extremely wonderful.
aw, i’m glad you’re having fun! :) hope he can find something even better than what he had before! and i love videos of OBaby! super cute!
My husband quit a company we worked for together after I had quit. We spent the next 6 months having the best time ever!! Then, after 6 months of hanging out and having fun, we got married and started our company! So, I know that good things will come of this! Enjoy your time with your little family.
You got your business cards first, right?????? (KIDDING!!)
Good for him, I am very proud of you guys for taking this leap into incertainty. When we did it, it was so great, and has opened so many wonderful doors for us. I hope DanO’s new path in life will be reveiled to you soon.
Have SO much fun in Oregon. Sounds so wonderful. (I will be praying for a smooth trip.. planes + babies = no fun!!!) :)
I am not going to act like that didn’t cross my mind! Alas, we will have to pay full price if we need to order more. Having our priorities straight, though? Totally worth it.
Celebrating family is a good way to set your priorities for the future. I wish you much love and success in this next leg of your journey
Have fun in Oregon! My brother lost his job once in the summer. He enjoyed that time as much as it seems you all are.
I wish your family the best on this new path and I pray everything goes well.
Isn’t funemployment…well, fun? My husband is in the middle of switching jobs unexpectedly at the moment and has had a full week & a half off. Oh, the joy of spending so much time together! I’m glad you’re enjoying your funemployment time and pray you have a safe trip to Oregon!
Enjoy the family time!
I cant imagine that anyone would have anything to say about your mothering… except good things that is.
What a refreshing outlook and perspective you have! Enjoy your time together! Praying for another, not to mentione better, job for your husband.
i love that dan.o stood up for you!he is a million times amazing! please tell him that. we are navigating our way through my husbands lay off as and have been since right after i had babybear. he says that the lay off has been a blessing in that he can be here to actually do things with the baby that are fun. not just the have-to’s. enjoy the time while you have it because soon enough great things will start happening for you all. HAVE A GREAT TRIP!
That’s outragious! I can’t believe someone would say anything negative about your mothering. I’ve never met you in person, but you exude your love and passion for your family through your words that anybody should be able to see that your a good mom. Way to go DanO for standing up for your wife!
Have fun in Oregon. I’ll be praying for safe travels and a new job to be found quickly.
Wow, I’m so sorry that happened. Have you guys thought about getting a lawyer?
I will pray for you all that Dan finds something soon. And in the meantime, enjoy your time together.
and I meant to add that Dan is an awesome husband for standing up to his boss. And what a jerk (the boss)!
I don’t know you but love your blog and I just wanted to say good for your husband, and I hope this unexpected event brings unexpected blessings.
Thanks, Gail!
Firstly, what a jerk.
Secondly, congrats on the new-found freedom.
Thirdly, enjoy the vacation! Sounds lovely!
And finally, good luck on the job search! = )
Yay for DanO for standing up to his boss! What fun family time to take a vaca to see your parents! I hope you have a nice smooth flight and safe travels!
Glad you’re firing up the grill and celebrating! Hope the “funemployment” keeps on going through your vacation (I love the Pacific NW and am just a teeeeeny bit jealous) and the laundry fairy magically comes to visit while you’re away. (Then, can you please send her/him to my house??)
Oi vey. Glad he’s home with you guys — sounds like a sucky story though!!
Every single day I want my partner to quit his job. It’s awful :(
I somehow stumbled upon your blog today and indulged in a good 1/2 hour of unadulterated stalking….you seem fun and interesting!!! And more importantly, we are both Mommies to handsome little guys around the same age!!
Anyways, nice to meet you and glad to hear that you are getting in some quality time with the hubby and baby… I guess this (f)unemployment period turned out to be a big blessing in disguise :)
Wow! I haven’t been reading your blog for very long, but from what I’ve read, I can’t imagine anyone wanting to say anything bad about you as a mother! Well, I hope DanO finds a new job soon,, but it definately is fun when they’ve got the time off together though! My husband was laid off for 5 months when I was pregnant with our first and it was pretty nice for awhile,, except for the stress of trying to find another job that would pay at least as much as the unemployment! :)
wow. giving up a sure thing in a job takes guts in times like these; way to really live out your priorities and convictions! enjoy your family time, at home and on your trip, and godspeed to a new job!
My husband lost his job and was unemployed for a brief time this summer. There was definitely uncertainty in that time, but we also really enjoyed the time together as a family. He hadn’t had a vacation in years, and we so needed that time together!
Sounds like you will be enjoying your time as well! Wonderful!
What a stand up guy that DanO is. He’s a keeper, i’d say. I wish the best of luck to your family while looking for a new job for DanO.
You are,without any shadow of a doubt, a great GREAT mom. End of story. {DanO is a great husband too. :) }
OBaby is even cuter *moving*. Oh my goodness,that just made my day!
Have a wonderful trip! I know you’ll take lots of great pictures! :)
♥
Kudos to your family for doing the hard thing for a greater good. I’m glad your time together has been rewarding and memory making! :)
We have been living in the land of uncertainty since last May when my husband was laid-off. Though stressful at times, we have been showered with blessings beyond our wildest imagination. And my husband was set free from a job he hated. I pray that you guys continue to be filled with joy and freedom and adventure on this ride!!! Have a great vacation together!
Ha! I love your sass, Allie. That’s right…”Hi former employer, since you made it clear that you read this blog…up yours!” (good thing Obaby can’t read yet. Wouldn’t want him seeing this… ;)
It’s hard for me to fathom giving up my job during these economic times. I’m not sure I could or would let my husband do this. I’m thankful that we’ve never been forced to decide between a job or our faith or convictions.
Had to do a triple read up at the first paragraph. I’m really sorry to hear that his employment ended after a thoughtless comment.
Praying seriously that the time away is excellent family time and that DanO will quickly come across a job where the Lord wants him.
I am believing for you that God has more for your family. For you guys to make that decision shows your great faith and love for the Lord. He will reward you!
The video was so cute! My favorite part… MommyO begging BabyO not to start climbing (just yet.) haha!
Enjoy your vacation!!
Great job DanO for sanding up for his family!! Have fun being (f)unemployed.
