So this post was written (and meant to be published) before we flew today, but because I apparently couldn’t tell the difference between am and pm when I published this, it is now being published while we’re flying.
It’s like I’m speaking to you from the past… OoOoOoOoOo… trippy.
~~~~~~
This is just an assumption, but flying with a mobile child is going to be trickier than flying with an immobile baby who naps at the drop of a hat (or drop of breast milk). For this reason (and against my better judgment) I spent an hour yesterday wandering the aisles of a small, local shop Target buying things to distract my squirmy munchkin on a 4 hour plane ride. This includes but is not limited to: A book of stickers, Gerber graduates puffs (yes, I read the ingredients. Yes I bought them anyway – like I said my survival>my judgment) and a Yo Gabba Gabba DVD.
O MY GOSH THERE I SAID IT.
I own a Yo Gabba Gabba DVD and I intend to put it on in front of my child in hopes that it will mushify his brain keep him quiet.
I’d go back and search through my posts for you to find the one where I claimed that I would NEVER, EVER purchase ANYTHING from the stupid consumer-driven infant and toddler entertainment industry EVEN IF someone held a gun to me head, but that would ruin all your fun, wouldn’t it?
O, and also? OBaby will be in disposable diapers for the entirety of our travel.
Feel free to search for posts making me a hypocrite on that one, too.
The DVD won’t be our first line of defense (she back-peddles), but I feel a little more comfortable knowing we have it in our arsenal. It’s like the second string trump card (and come on, we all know what the real trump cards are ::wink::).
I have a pretty clear distraction hierarchy in my head for the plane ride, worried about prepared in advance for those flustered moments of ‘O crap what do we do?’ It goes something like this:
“Should whining commence, implement Step 1. Complete subsequent steps until whining is alleviated.
- Give baby a ‘baby toy’
- Read a book to baby
- Sing The Wheels on the Bus with all the hand motions
- Put out some cereal puffs for baby to eat/slobber on and stick to his clothes
- Open sticker book for baby
- Let baby play with cell phone
- Play Yo Freaking Gabba on the laptop
- BOOBS
Here’s hoping we never get past step 6.
PS: OBaby is totally stoked for this vacation.
you are brave! how do you fly w/ his car seat and pack and play? i hope the flight goes/went well! and where did you get those baby sunglasses?
btw, i’ve heard that puffs also come in organic. :) they’re supposed to be a huge hit!
I mean, seriously. This picture just made my day. How does he just keep getting cuter?! Just when I think it isn’t possible…he does it again! AAAH!
i got to #8, and giggled. bet you get some visitors who just googled it and never expected to end up at a mama-blog. =)
I can’t wait to hear how the flight went! Hopefully OBaby was an angel:) And seriously. That picture? Those sunglasses? Too cute for words.
Awww — cute baby shades! Do they have straps? Can’t wait to hear about your plane ride — I’m also venturing on a 4 hour plane ride in 2 months with my then 6 month bebe — Yikes. Good luck and have fun!
Oh, goodness! LOL. That post made me crack up! I absolutely LOVE the picture of Obaby!! Hope you all have an awesome vacation. It’s nice and sunny here in the Willamette valley today! I imagine it is a gorgeous day at the coast too (-:
first of all, he is soooo cute! and, ya know what, let the haters hate! who cares! we all need our bag of tricks and i admit mine has a baby einstein dvd! yep, it sure does! how else am i going to be able to distract him while i brush my teeth? you do what you gotta do!!
hilarious post! and cutest picture ever of OBaby. happy vacay!
Well,somebody’s lookin’ pretty cool! :)
♥
This might be my favorite post. Ever.
Hey there- they have an organic version of Puffs at Whole Foods, or you can buy them on Amazon. . .
http://www.amazon.com/HAPPYBABY-Organic-Greens-2-1-Ounce-Packages/dp/B001NXM3I0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1269484743&sr=8-1
By the way- that was totally judgment free- all bets are off on airplane rides with small infants!
Ha! No judgment was interpreted. I just saw those organic puffs online but they didn’t have them at my Target. Boo, lame. I will definitely be buying those from here on out, though. Thanks!
Oh good! Just wanted to make sure you heard it in the spirit it was intended. They seem like a decent deal when you buy them online- only like $3 each when you break it out. My friends little girl loves them. :)
Been in your shoes! Flying with baby makes everything more interesting (read: harder).
Ooh, babies on a plane are a challenge – you’ve gotta have a plan. Sounds like your prepared though, my son was 8 months when we traveled to Asia and that was mobile enough. Good luck!
I think that you might be surprised how well he does! (even though you guys are already there by now!!)
I wonder if it was possible that you were able to fathom how stinkin cute your little baby boy would be. I mean.. he is just so stinkin precious.
Hope you are enjoying vacation!
Well, I will definitely be looking at mamas on planes differently this summer on my many (read: 2) plane rides. And if I can muster up the courage to talk to someone besides my husband, possibly offering a hand. Also, (as if you didn’t know) that is an adorable picture.
you make this twenty-something want a baby NOW. Step 1….get married.
hope the plane experience wasn’t all that you dreaded!
OH such a cute picture! We took my then 16 month old on a NINE HOUR plane ride this past summer. I judge not and figure anything that works is fair game! :) We had two carry-ons full of stuff for her but hey – it worked! Nine hours and only a measly little half hour nap and we carried her back off the plane. The people behind us stopped us and said they were amazed and would not have even known she was there if they didn’t see us sit down with her (and she played peek-a-boo with them right at the end of the flight). It took a lot of work (distraction) but we were pretty darn happy. Hope your flight went super well!!
OH MY GOSH! look at his little baby sunglasses! I loooove them!
(Also, this is why I am trying not to write down my parenting ‘ideals.’ That way when my baby is actually here, no one can call me out. It’s not in writing!)
I stumbled across your blog and love it! I normally am not a big commenter, but where did you find those sunglasses? So cute.
Target!
Sanity is worth a lot, even if it means showing OBaby a video now and then. I show William (10 months) Baby Einstein movies (gasp!) once in a while if I need 15 minutes to get something done, and he absolutely loves them. :)
Have fun on your trip!
Love this post, Love your blog, can’t wait to hear you speak at CBC.
I am about to take my 9 month old son on his first plane ride to meet his grandparents–the kicker, though…its all the way in England! And I am so so so nervous about that plane ride, glad to see I’m not the only one! Now that you have already braved the trip to Oregon, any advice on how to make the trip an easier one? did your dvd’s work, lol?
ashley
btw: you’re an awesome momma!
Thanks for this post! Very helpful! I’m flying from Oregon to Mississippi at the end of the month with my 10 month old, who will be 11 months old by then…. The kicker? I will be all by myself! I’m terrified! It will be 10+ hours of traveling by the time we get there! Eek! Thanks for some good ideas! I’d never thought of bringing a baby movie as a later line of defense!
I love Yo Gabba Gabba. My one year old has gone crazy for it since 6 months old! I’m impressed by how many famous people have done cameos on the show. DJ Lance is the best!
