BlogHer ate my content

No, seriously. For about a week and a half I have been running around like a blogger with my fingers cut off, not having the time, creativity, follow-through, or mental capacity to write or publish much. I blame BlogHer, the conference in New York City from which I just returned.

(I was rushing to an appointment less than an hour after touching down in NYC, and I looked up to see this. I almost missed it.)

Ironic, no? A blog conference ate my blog content? Here’s the good news, though:

At 7am Saturday morning, I snuck out of my fabulously soft, white linen’d bed in a Manhattan hotel, found a corner of my room to curl up in, and verbal vomited over a dozen post ideas onto my laptop. It was glorious.

Some of them are stories to tell, others are tips to share, still others are messages I’ve been inspired or encouraged to finally write out for the world to read. I simply cannot wait to share them with you. I missed you, friends. I missed interacting with you and sharing our daily lives together in this space and I am excited to get back to that.

But for now I need to go smell my baby’s head one more time and then scrub the city out from underneath my fingernails.

I hope you’ll post about what you meant by your tweet that it’s good to criticize people who are standing up for what they believe in if what they believe in is “immoral.” Immoral according to whom? Christians should be loving and tolerant. The Bible also tells us to share with others everything we have, yet you re-tweeted someone’s annoyance about people feeling “entitled to what others produce.” Here’s hoping Blogher ’10 exposed you to all kinds of people and beliefs and maybe opened your mind a bit! :)

O, absolutely! The twitter conversation you are referring to went something like this:

Someone else’s tweet: “Thought for the evening: Standing up for what’s right ISN’T creating drama…opposing those standing up for what they believe in…IS”
My tweet: “Until what people are standing up for is immoral. Opposing that is good.”

And I realize that this is too obvious to most people to spend an entire post on, so I’ll just summarize it for you as such: If someone were standing up for the right to sell young girls and women into the global sex trade, then opposing that and criticizing what they were standing up for would be right and good to do. The sex trade is immoral. It should be opposed no matter how many people are doing it and think it’s ok.

Also, you are absolutely right. We are to share our second coat and even the shirt on our own back, according to the Bible. We are also not to covet what others have. I will let you interpret the implications of that and search for a middle ground where those two perspectives meet.

Most importantly, I appreciate your searching through my twitter stream to find possible places to insult me and indicate that I am a hypocritical Christian and spending that much time trying to bring me down simply based on the fact that I affiliate myself with a certain group. I would absolutely love it if you spent even a fraction as much time trying to get to know me as a person and not someone to attack. Let me know when you have a moment to do so!

      Allison

It wasn’t obvious at all; that’s why I asked! For all I know, you could’ve been talking about homosexuality being immoral. Thanks for clearing that up about selling women & children into slavery, although I must admit I’ve never encountered anyone standing up for that. I hope I never do! I didn’t search back through anything, by the way. I’ve just been reading for a while & have a good memory. Not insulting or trying to bring you down at all, just making commentary based on a few things I’d observed as a casual reader. You get so worked up over any comments that have the slightest hint of questioning you. One would think an experienced and confident blogger could take such things in stride. Again, I appreciate your explaining what you meant by those things, but am disappointed by the sardonic and bitter tone used while doing it. Blog readers shouldn’t feel like they can only leave “puppies and rainbows” comments, but it seems those are what you prefer. I’ll refrain from leaving anything else in the future. Thanks!

    • 16.AllisonO says:

The sex trade was just an example to point out that “tolerance” is not always the right thing.

Non puppies and rainbow comments always welcome, Samantha! (Although I’m not sure I would define myself as an experienced and confident blogger, just a person with a heart and the ability to be hurt as much as the next person.)

It was the fact that the two things you “called me out on” had absolutely nothing to do with this post that made it an attack. And the reference to being close minded. That is also an attack.

Please feel free to leave any and all respectful, oppositional and informed comments that are relevant to the content which I post whenever you’d like! Trolling and pulling jabs out of nowhere though? No thanks!

      • 17.Samantha Ledbetter says:

It’s difficult to comment on a relevant post when the content in question comes from your Twitter feed. I don’t tweet, and thus am unable to reply there. I was unaware that using one of the myriad other ways with which you’ve provided people the ability to contact you would constitute an attack. I apologize. I also never said you were closed-minded. Anyone can have their mind opened – there is no limit to that. So even someone with an already open mind can (and should!) Have it opened further through experiences and interactions. Assuming I meant your mind was closed was merely defensiveness on your part. As you said, however, you’re human with human emotions and the ability to be hurt, so I’ll chalk your assumption of another “attack” up to that. Thank you again for your time. Have a wonderful day and a blessed week! Enjoy being back with your husband and child after being away for the conference (see – relevant!). :)

Welcome back! Hope you had a great trip. Love the post title.

Welcome back…sounds like you had a great trip!! It’s too bad when you write such a fun-loving post that you have to get smacked in the face with a comment from something you Tweeted days ago. I don’t use Twitter but it’s too bad she couldn’t have used that or an email to sound off rather than in a comment. (HUGS)

Welcome back! I was expecting some sort of “I’m HOME!!” Twitter update with a pic of you hugging that precious family of yours, but never saw it LOL

Glad you had a fun time. Bet it’s THE BEST to be back home, in your own bed, huh? :-D

    {oh and I’m looking forward to reading the posts flowing from your verbal vomit ROFL}

I was too busy hugging my precious family to tweet it :) Ok and sleeping. I did a lot of that, too instead of tweeting.

Allison, it was so so SO lovely to meet you – my only complaint is that we didn’t get to spend more time! And I feel the odd need to mention that I found you incredibly warm, accepting, and open – not to mention just plain charming as heck.

    xo!
