January 13, 2012: 180lbs
Ladies and gentlemen (hi Dad!), despite having traveled across the country for 7 of the last 9 days, I saw 180 on the scale this morning!
That is 7lbs lost, gone, vanished, PEACED OUT. (PS: OBoy was 7lbs 10oz at birth. It’s like I’ve lost a newborn!)
And cooler than that (because in the end that number on the scale is just that: on a scale) I have lost an inch off of my waist! A FREAKING INCH in 2 weeks!
(Four more of these for good measure: !!!!)
Clothes (pants especially) are fitting differently. I bought a belt because when running to catch a train in Portland I had to keep one hand on my pants so they wouldn’t fall down (true story). Medifast, I think I love you.
Did I stay 100% on plan on this trip?
Haha. Hahahaha. Ha.
No.
We ate out from time to time, I would leave the house for a whole day at a time and realize I forgot to bring more than 1 Medifast meal (on the nursing mothers plan I eat 3 a day), and I usually ate what everyone else was eating (read: spaghetti, french toast, mashed potatoes), I just ate smaller portions. I was very, very aware of my choices on what to put on my plate and how much.
Thankfully, we stayed with my parents who have an elliptical machine in their basement, so I was able to get a couple of good workouts in, too.
Another choice I made was to enjoy: to enjoy that large Irish Cream latte that my step-sister made me at the coffee house where she works, to enjoy the BBQ chicken pizza DanO and I split on our date night, to enjoy a scoop of ice cream after a meal with our entire family.
That, I think, is something different in me since starting Medifast. Before, dessert, indulgent coffee drinks, and high-calorie meals out-to-eat were assumed. Now, they are something I treat myself to, something special to slow down and enjoy. They aren’t things I shouldn’t eat, they’re things I should only eat occasionally. So far, this mental switch has been good for me.
The Medifast ‘to-go’ meals were a life saver in airports, on public transportation, and right before I was tempted to stuff myself silly with clam chowder. I found myself gravitating toward the bars (lemon meringue and PB crunch, especially) because I could eat them with one hand while, say, pushing a stroller through Concourse B with the other.

What is your favorite ‘only occasionally’ food?

That is so great!! CONGRATULATIONS!!
So proud of you! The first weeks are hardest and to add travel to that? eek. You did an awesome job with moderation and you are learning some of the most important lessons for maintaining in the future.
Keep up the great work!
I’m a little confused about Medifast (and the website didn’t help my questions much) so maybe you could clarify for me. Is Medifast a plan that provides meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Or is it something that provides shakes, snacks, etc. but then gives you recipes to follow for main meals? You have me quite interested with 7 lbs lost so far. I’m still nursing our second born, but the weight is not coming off. I would love to start something nursing friendly that will help me lose weight but not jeopardize my milk supply.
Oh and I wanted to add, way to go Mama!
Congrats!! Hard work pays off :) Favorite “only occasionally” food? Macaroni & cheese! It’s… just. So good.
You go girl!!!
Congrats Alison! I love the image of you holding up your pants while running to catch a train. Hilar.
I knew you could do it and I KNEW Medifast could get you there! I’m so happy for you!!
I’m so happy for you, it’s such a great feeling isn’t it!?
I’m curious have you ever done any other diet plans or programs? What about frozen meals you buy in the grocery store? I’ve been eating Lean Cuisines for lunches for years (mostly because I like the taste and convenience, and they’re the lowest sodium of the grocery store “diet” meals) but I never lost any significant weight.
I’m wondering how MediFast’s meals compare to the store bought stuff. Unfortunately we don’t have the money for a program like this one, not now anyway. (Even with the coupons lol)
I’m nursing my 8.5 week old. 2 weeks PP I’d lost 25 of my 30 lbs of baby weight. It took 5 more weeks to start losing weight again but now I’m actually 5 lbs below my pre-baby weight. My short-medium term goal is 49 lbs more, and then over the next few years another 30-50. I am hoping the nursing and adding more physical activity into my life will be enough to get me at least partway there. I just enjoy carbs and eating out too much.
(PS: I looked on their website and couldn’t find the nursing mothers program, is there a direct link? I found diabetes programs but not the one you’re on?)
Congrats! It sounds like you’re making fantastic progress and really staying motivated (I don’t think I would touch an eliptical while on vacation…”
“They aren’t things I shouldn’t eat, they’re things I should only eat occasionally.” I love you’re thinking here! In honor of the new year I’m trying to reframe my thinking a little bit too. I’ve started thinking about what I “choose to” and “choose not to” do instead of thinking about what I “have to” or “can’t” do. It’s really helping me to prioritze the time I spend on my blog, cooking, and crafting.
Congratulations!! That is so awesome! I usually gain weight on vacation so this is amazing! I know that you’re on a Nursing Moms program and it’s designed for nursing moms (duh) so I’m wondering if they’ve addressed weight loss this fast? I’m only asking because I recently read that nursing moms shouldn’t lose more than two pounds per week because toxins are stored in fat and go into breastmilk. I’m SO NOT judging, I’m honestly asking if the program addresses that, because maybe what I read is wrong. I only wish I was losing more than two pounds per week! ;) Congratulations again, that’s awesome!!
Congratulations and keep up the great work!!!
(clearly im still reading through all your blogs catching up.. but I just wanted to say you are awesome for making the weight AND budget changes!!! I feel like one would be more than enough… but both is rockstar!!! (I am doing neither lol but should be )
