O My Dormer.

Remember that thing I said in the “before” post about the “We might as well just move the walls around while we’re at it.” realization we had? Well, somewhere along the line, and I can’t recall exactly when it was, that “Let’s move walls.” became “Let’s rip off half of our house’s roofline and build a full-height extension with a shed dormer.”

Scope creep much?

Starting at 8am on Friday (which DanO took off of work, and by “work” I mean sitting at a desk developing software as opposed to dramatically modifying 75 year old houses) we began ripping a 20ft square hole in our house.

(And by “we” I mean my husband and my father-in-law. OBaby and I listened to the pounding and sawing from a safe distance.)

And then a semi-truck which converts into a skid-loader (?!?) came and dropped off a bunch of lumber in our front yard, just in time for lunch.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who would take a picture of a funny looking transformer-type truck contraption dumping a bajillionĀ piecesĀ of wood in their front yard.

I’m not, right? You would capture this too, right?

Anyway, after the go-go gadget truck delivery and lunch, the hole got bigger.

And bigger.

At this point, OBaby and I watched from a safe distance.

And we both wondered what the heck we had gotten ourselves into.

The hole now sufficiently large, it was time to start closing it back up. Much geometry and skill saw usage ensued. I was of little help to this process, with the one exception of always being ready to hand DanO more nails to reload the framing gun (construction skillz, I haz them).

DanO’s brother, who is also currently overhauling an older house in Minnesota, came for the free pizza and stayed to help with the wall (it was dinner time at this point).

And yes, DanO and his dad are wearing the same exact shirt. O for cute, right?

While much progress was made, the sun went down on this day and there was still a gaping hole in my house. Yikes.

Some days I wish I could just be following it, too. Alas, it consumes my life right now.

Thank goodness for clear skis on the horizon! :) We had one of those funny delivery trucks come to our old house when we finished off the attic. Except the drywall got lifted on a crane and delivered through a third story window! (and I wasn’t blogging at the time, so I didn’t get any pictures. :( So sad. Good luck on the project! (How exciting! :) )

    Love O’baby’s facial expression.

Where are the safety shoes? Didn’t someone just nail their foot a week or so ago????

Ah! I know! We were just talking about getting him some official work boots. Thankfully now that demolition is over so most of the risk is gone, but some *small* inkling I have tells me this will not be our last project. Time to invest in some, for sure.

I seriously laughed at this post — for many reasons:

Their matching shirts and OBaby’s face, and how he’s gripping his seat. Soooooo cute! ;-)

Okay, really now. That picture of OBaby sums up this post for sure. Is it just me, or is anyone else dying for the continuation of this post? (Nottomention it’s gorgeous there!)

We waved to many a neighbor and small neighbor child from the roof of our house this weekend. Most exciting thing going on on the block, for sure!

We just did a similar renovation to our house, before moving into it! The outside is complete, but the inside still remains unfinished. This year our winter project will be putting in a bathroom and master suite! I’m so excited for the end result, but the process is a long one! Good luck!

Good thing the skeeters are gone, right? You know, we could get snow here in MN anytime now, but I think you’ll be safe for a little while longer. But, just in case…work quick boys!

Closed up before the rain falls, insulated before the snow flies, and “done” before April 1st is the plan.

      Ahem.

      …is our hope.

Wow! Exciting though! I would so love to remodel this house we’re in. It’s so much work, but I love this kind of stuff….if we only had the money…Most likely we’ll just be selling this place next year and trying to find a bigger house that will fit our small budget….Yikes…

I LOVE OBabys facial expression! I imagine that is the exact look that was on your face too! LOL Gosh, he’s looking so grown up!

WOW! Our family is just about to embark on a similar construction project – ripping off the roof and adding a second story, above the garage. I am going to be checking in here to watch how you all do it! :)

I know everyone else has said it but O that face! That photo would definitely be going in a frame if I were you. The one photo that tells the story of the remodel! Thanks for sharing it with us, I enjoy watching the progression!
